Clouds in South Africa

As I listed here, one of the things I love about this country are the clouds. They seem to interact far more here than in England or Finland, mostly because of the mountains around which are much closer to clouds than the normal ground level is. The mountains also create differed air streams and weather systems so clouds behave differently.

This morning I was in my bedroom after Milja and Matias had left for school and looked out East towards Mandela Park (informal settlement) and saw a lovely red shade on the bottom of the low-hung clouds over that side of the valley. The sun rises behind the mountains that line the East length of Hout Bay and this morning was shining through in between the top ridge of the mountains and the clouds.

Further over round towards the North there was much higher cloud and the sun catching it gave a different effect.

Then, as I looked further round to the North, this time along the side of the house, I saw thick white cloud tumbling fast into the valley from the West. I went out the front door to get a better view. The cloud was piling in from the Atlantic side of Hout Bay, and as we drove to work along the Atlantic route, we drove up right into the cloud and could see it clearly rising up from closer to sea level, up over the mountains, where it then fell into Hout Bay. You just don't get that in Niittykumpu or Saffron Walden :)
